Directions:

From I5 in Redding take the 299 Eureka/Weaverville exit heading west. Drive about 10 miles towards the Whiskeytown Recreation Area. Take a left on JFK Memorial road by the visitors center. Follow the road to the dam and stay to the left on Paige Bar drive. Drive about a mile and look for the big dirt parking lot on the left. This is the Shasta Mine Loop area.

The Trail:

From the parking area head across the street and head down a dirt road. Cross the bridge and start heading up Peltier Valley road. Take a right at your first fork following the fire road uphill. At about a mile there will be a small creek to cross. Keep climbing up the road for about another mile and look for a trail that's marked 'Peltier Trail' on your left. Keep climbing and you'll come to another split. Once you see the sign 'Salt Gulch' to your right stay to the left up some loose rocks. Taking a right would be part of the Couch trail. Climb up a little and you'll hit the first downhill section. Be sure to look for a big boulder on your left. This part of the trail is easy to miss. When you find it take a left down the steep terain. This part of the trail becomes rocky as you approach another creek crossing. Careful crossing this creek as the rocks are steep and slippery. Follow the trail back up and once you reach the top the downhill singletrack begins. Once you reach a split take a left away from the Kanaka Peak sign. Ride down the trail for about a mile and turn right just before the creek. This trail will guide you for about a quarter mile to where a wide creek crossing will get you wet. While crossing the creek look for the trail to start on your right. Keep riding and you'll hit another split with another Kanaka Peak trail sign. Turn left away from Kanaka Peak. Another split hits about a quarter-mile stay to the left. Stay straight on the trail through the bends and drops, ignore a trail on the right that drops down towards the creek. The trail eventually hits a dirt road where you'll turn left up a hill. Go around the brown gate and drop back down to the right. This is where you started the climb. Head back up to the parking lot.
